GEF SGP Funds Renewable Energy Center in Jamaica
26 July 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) has provided a US$40,000 grant for the Jamaica Maritime Institute Trust Fund (JMITF) to establish a renewable energy center in Kingston, Jamaica.
The project, implemented by the UN Development Programme (UNDP), is titled “Establishing the Caribbean Maritime Institute as a Learning Centre for Renewable Energy, Producing Wind Energy/Potable Drinking Water,” and was launched on 26 July 2012. It aims to support capacity development and technical support, as well as to raise awareness about climate change issues.
The Renewable Energy Centre will undertake projects such as desalinating seawater and purifying rainwater through the reverse-osmosis (RO) mechanism. These initiatives will rely on renewable energy sources, such as wind generators and solar energy. The project will have a large focus on education, training and knowledge sharing. [GEF Press Release]
