DESA-UNHCR Event Highlights Energy-Humanitarian Nexus [viewed]

Participants at the event, titled 'Leaving no one behind: Energy for humanitarian response and sustainable development,' argued that displaced people's energy needs must be met in order to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 (Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all).

Event: UN High-Level Event: Leaving No One Behind: Energy for Humanitarian Response and Sustainable Development [viewed]

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) are organizing this panel discussion on the eve of the UN Summit on Refugees and Migrants. The event will promote the use of sustainable energy and highlight its value in improving health, education, women's empowerment and resilience to crises. The organizers are showcasing various energy solutions and emphasizing the need to improve energy access for refugees and displaced people in camps, given that 80% of them do not have such access. The event is organized in partnership with the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, the IKEA Foundation, the Moving Energy Initiative, Schneider Electric and UN-Energy.

ESCAP, DESA, UNOSD Seminar Supports Energy Access [viewed]

unescap_undesa_undesa_un_unenergy_se4all23 June 2016: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the UN Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD), in cooperation with UN-Energy and the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative, jointly organized a seminar on energy access, which discussed alternatives to the use of unsustainable solid biomass for cooking and heating. The seminar promoted efforts towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7, which aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, in particular target 7.1 (By 2030, ensure universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services).

Rural Energy Access Conference Addresses Problems of the Energy-Poor [viewed]

United Nations8 January 2014: The UN-organized 'Global Conference on Rural Energy Access: A Nexus Approach to Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication' addressed problems of the “energy-poor” and discussed solutions such as stand-alone renewable electricity systems and advanced cook stoves. The conference concluded with a call for a “nexus approach” to integrating energy access in national sustainable development plans and across the post-2015 development agenda.

Event: Rural Energy Access: A Nexus Approach to Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication [viewed]

UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA), in collaboration with Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL), UN-Energy and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), is organizing this event to strengthen capacities on policy, technical and entrepreneurial approaches to rural energy access for eradicating poverty. Specific objectives of the conference include, among others: promoting dialogue among practitioners, experts, donors and policy-makers; assessing potential integrated policy options to address rural energy poverty; identify synergies between energy and other development factors including health, education, economic growth, gender, water and food security; discussing ways to apply models and practices to scale-up clean cookstoves and renewable energy home systems; and supporting the Rio+20 follow-up process and the post-2015 development agenda.

Event: E-discussion on Integrating Energy into Post-2015 Development Framework [viewed]

An e-discussion on how to effectively integrate energy issues into the post-2015 development framework is taking place on the World We Want 2015 platform, from 11-22 March. Topics include the global goals, targets and indicators needed to ensure integration of energy into the post-2015 agenda, and how to ensure effective implementation. Participants are invited to comment, discuss and debate key questions on this topic through the online platform. This e-discussion is one of four online consultations that are part of the Global Thematic Consultation on Energy, which aims to build consensus on a set of global objectives and priorities for energy within the post-2015 development agenda. This consultation is co-led by UN-Energy and the UN Secretary-General's Sustainable Energy For All Initiative (SE4ALL) and supported by the Governments of Mexico and Norway.

This e-discussion is one of four online consultations that are part of the Global Thematic Consultation on Energy, which aims to build consensus on a set of global objectives and priorities for energy within the post-2015 development agenda. This consultation is co-led by UN-Energy and the UN Secretary-General's Sustainable Energy For All Initiative (SE4ALL), and supported by the Governments of Mexico and Norway.
